A pasta party under the stars, buffet style

Posted on August 14, 2026August 30, 2026 By foteiniathome@gmail.com

You might think I plan my party theme and menu first, and only then decide who to invite. But it’s actually the other way around.

I always have a theme in mind, but I only design the menu once I’ve decided who my guests will be. That gives me options! It helps me create a menu that suits the group, while also keeping the budget, preparation time, and serving style realistic.

This dinner party was all about pasta and Italian-inspired flavours, and I was expecting 15 guests in the garden. That meant one thing: it had to be easy to prepare, simple to serve, and cost-effective, with a tablescape that wouldn’t take hours to set up.

My rule of thumb is simple: if there are more than six people coming, it’s a buffet. And honestly, that’s my favourite way to host.

The buffet styling

Above the table
I hung a DIY bunting made from paper napkins, and it was such a hit! It’s inexpensive, easy to make, and instantly creates a festive atmosphere.

The buffet table
I used my red gingham tablecloth as the base and decorated it with garden lanterns, red-and-white ribbons, and pots of fresh basil. I also made DIY vases using empty tomato paste tins—a little nod to the charming cottage style that every Greek grandma seemed to have back in the day.

The menu

Starters
When it comes to feeding a crowd, nothing beats a grazing board. For this party, I prepared an antipasti board and served homemade garlic bread alongside it to scoop up all the delicious spreads and sauces. I’ll definitely be doing that again.

Main course
I needed something that could be prepared in advance, served effortlessly, and enjoyed by everyone. A pasta bar was the obvious choice! I served classic meatballs, rich tomato sauce, fresh pesto, and one of my favourite traditional dishes from Mani, topped with a fried egg. It was an absolute winner.

Dessert
A pasta party can only end one way: tiramisu. I made two versions—a classic coffee tiramisu and an apricot version for the children. They were such a success that my guests were actually negotiating over who would get which flavour!

We finished the evening with Aperol Spritz in the garden as the sun set and the evening slowly settled over the dahlias and fragrant herbs. Friends, cocktails, little bites, and dining al fresco—pure bliss.

I hope this inspires you to invite friends over more often and shows you that stress-free hosting really does exist. With a little planning, beautiful gatherings don’t have to be complicated.

Love,

Foteini

My childhood summers served on an aluminum tray

My grandad, on my mum’s side, absolutely loved fish. Every summer, we’d gather around the table on the veranda for long family lunches. While the main course was cooking, he and my dad would play backgammon, sipping ouzo with meze (the Greek version of tapas) and arguing—always with big smiles—about…

“She is a lady”

Nothing Says “Welcome May” More Than Roses! I miss the rose bushes from my garden in Seattle so much —I had more than 20 varieties, each more fragrant than the last. Every spring, I would fill my home with freshly cut bouquets, and it’s a tradition I still cherish. This…
